Re-Interpreting Mosque

A Mosque is not meant for performing 5 times daily prayers only, but also a space that acts to connect the society with the religion, a space for social interaction, and a space that supports the surrounding community and which preaches the true meaning of the religion through its design.

WHY?

The Eternal Idea of Mosque

“It is not righteousness that you turn your faces to the East or the West, but it is righteousness to believe in God and the Last Day and the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your substance out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves; to be steadfast in prayer, and practice regular charity, to fulfill the contracts which ye have made; and to be firm and patient, in pain or suffering and adversity and throughout all periods of panic; such are the people of truth, the God-fearing.”

Aside from prayers, a Muslim has many social obligations to fulfill. A true Muslim is not one that secludes oneself from the society. Narrated  Sa’id Al-Khudri: Somebody asked, “O Allah’s Apostle! Who is the best among the people?” Allah’s Apostle replied, “A believer who strives his utmost in Allah’s Cause with his life and property.” They asked, “Who is next?” He replied, “A believer who stays in one of the mountain paths worshiping Allah and leaving the people secure from his mischief.”

Thus, if we understand this definition of worship, we see a different picture of the Mosque’s role and functions during Prophet Muhammad’s (Peace be upon him) lifetime. We must agree that mosque design approach should not just be taken as to design just a building and also not just for a single set of obligatory worship but more of a kind of Social Center and an inspiration for the people who are visiting the space.

Mosque and the environmental responsibility

According to the Qur’an Allah has made believers the stewards and protectors of the earth. So it must be the concern of every single Muslim worldwide, to consider this important environmental ethic with the most beloved place to Allah.

Going by this Every single building, including  the Mosque, built by a Muslim, should be environment friendly.
